In 2006 the National LGBTQ Task Force published a comprehensive report that changed the way we think about the issue of LGBTQ youth homelessness. “Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Youth: An Epidemic of Homelessness” is still referenced by advocates, policymakers, and service providers. After a decade of working to improve supports for young people experiencing housing instability and homelessness, we know that this report no longer accurately represents the current landscape of needs for LGBTQ young people experiencing homelessness. We have learned that addressing LGBTQ youth homelessness requires that we all work together, and it is in that spirit of collaboration that The National LGBTQ Task Force and the True Colors Fund sought to revise this report together.
Our collaborative report includes 68 contributors, peer reviewers, and young people from 40 different organizations. We also included the input of LGBTQ young people with lived experiences of homelessness and housing instability – after all they are the experts of their own experiences. Each submission was peer reviewed by a young person, as well as by an individual working on issues related to LGBTQ youth homelessness.
This is just the tip of the iceberg! We recognize that each topic addressed in this report could have its own report. In some cases, such resources do exist. Our goal with this report is to break through the clutter and provide a clear and succinct overview of LGBTQ youth homelessness in America. For each topic addressed herein, we have linked to more comprehensive information created by the contributors to the report.
We developed this resource with the entire community in mind. It can be used not only by policy makers, advocates, and service providers already working on this issue, but also by folks who are interested in this issue and looking for more resources and ways to get involved. We also wanted to drive home the fact that this is not just an LGBT or homeless issue – this is a community issue that requires we all work together to find a solution.
